DSC Attorneys is one of the few law firms in South Africa that is an active supporter of community and charitable events.
One of our main beneficiaries is One Chance At Life (OCAL) Global. The goals of this non-profit organisation are to provide wellness activities, economic opportunities and sustainable skills development programmes for differently abled people.
Founder of OCAL Global, Nicolene Anley, says, “People are disabled not because of their condition; they are disabled by the poorly accessible world we currently live in. With all those daily challenges, disability can be something that you create within yourself… that disables you from living a life that’s whole and that’s full and that’s meaningful.”
OCAL Global Journey for Change
One of OCAL Global’s main initiatives is its annual OCAL Global Journey for Change event. This is a 10-day, round-the-clock relay, spanning hundreds of kilometres across South Africa. The annual relay was started in 2016 to create awareness about disability and raise funds for differently abled children in the Northern Cape, which has the highest prevalence of persons with disabilities in South Africa – estimated at 11% of the population.
DSC Attorneys joined this year’s relay
The 2018 OCAL Global Journey for Change was the most incredible one yet. The route was 2200 kilometres long. It started in Tshwane, ran through the Kalahari, Namibia and the Cederberg mountains, and ended in Cape Town – where the last leg formed part of the FNB Cape Town 12 OneRun.
A team comprising twelve people (11 runners and a hand cyclist) began the journey on 10 May.
DSC Attorneys joined the core team to complete the last leg of the relay on 19 May. Thirteen DSC staff members – all with different fitness levels – took on the 12-kilometre race to help raise awareness for OCAL Global’s cause.
Funds go to the children of the Northern Cape
The funds raised from 2018’s Journey for Change went towards buying a wheelchair for a 12-year-old boy with cerebral palsy who lives in a township in the Pixley ka Seme District in the Northern Cape. DSC Attorneys joined OCAL Global on a day trip to the district, to visit the children with disabilities in the area.
