DSC Attorneys was delighted to join non-profit organisation, One Chance At Life (OCAL) Global, in giving some fun to differently abled children in a Northern Cape community – and in dropping off a new wheelchair for a 12-year-old boy with cerebral palsy.
Tackling the disability stigma in the Northern Cape
OCAL Global creates awareness and raises funds for children who are differently abled. One of the organisation’s projects involves working with differently abled children in the Pixley ka Seme District in the Northern Cape.
Founder of OCAL Global, Nicolene Anley, has been visiting this community for a few years and has profiled over 2000 children under 12 who have disabilities. The Northern Cape has the highest prevalence of persons with disabilities – roughly 11 in every 100 people – in South Africa.
The organisation runs regular day trips to the district. Through simple, fun activities like colouring in, face painting and playing games, OCAL Global aims to bring some normality to the lives of children living with disabilities in Pixley.
DSC Attorneys joined OCAL Global on their most recent trip in July. Jacqueline Hudson, an associate at DSC Attorneys, said the experience was eye-opening and that she was very appreciative to be part of the activities on the day.
However, this trip wasn’t only about interacting and playing with the children of Pixley. It was also the day of a special delivery.
Wheelchair delivery
DSC Attorneys and OCAL Global delivered a wheelchair to one of the children of the Pixley district.
Thato (name changed) has cerebral palsy and needs his mother’s constant assistance to perform basic, day-to-day activities. Because he can’t walk, his mother often carries him, covering long distances as she handles daily errands.
Both Thato and his mother were very happy about the donation. Thato’s confidence has grown and he reports feeling much more independent. His mother said that it was the first time in a long time that she felt hope.
The wheelchair donation was made possible through funds raised by OCAL Global’s 2018 Journey for Change.
